Back on our home pitch, the Rockets started brightly with some good team play and passing movements. It wasn’t long before the home side took the lead courtesy of a shot from Jamie. Despite the Rockets having most of the ball and at times dominating, MK came back with two goals, one of which was an unstoppable free-kick into the top corner from their ‘giant’ right sided defender.
After this the Rockets bounced back with plenty more possession, a shot was parried by MK’s keeper falling to Connor who made no mistake with the rebound.
Despite more possession and pressure by Olney, MK somehow managed to latch onto one of the ‘giant’s’ throw-in’s and snatch the lead just before half-time 2-3.
In view of our current goalkeeping problem and wanting to chase the game, the Coaches decided to ask Shane to take a turn in goal for the second half.
This tactic required high levels of concentration throughout the defence. Unfortunately kicking uphill in the second half with some legs and minds starting to tire, we conceded again to make it 2-4 to MK.
A brief spell of exchanging wingers bore no fruit, but having swapped Finn and Matt back to their favoured position it wasn’t long before a through ball released Matt. One on one with their keeper, the outcome was in no doubt as the ball flew into the roof of the net.
Unfortunately the closing stages saw a tired looking defence unable to give Shane the protection that he needed, and we conceded twice more.
Overall a good performance throughout the team – on the day there was some outstanding team play and some good individual performances. We were undone by our lack of a regular keeper and once again struggled with the ‘giant’s’ throw-ins.
